Prominent Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has urged the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to prioritise dialogue with the Federal Government as a means of resolving his ongoing legal and political challenges.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by his lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Igboho praised Kanu for his recent decision to officially cancel the Monday sit-at-home order that has affected the South-East for the past five years.

Igboho described the suspension of the weekly protest as a crucial step toward restoring peace and stability in the region.

The statement read, “Chief Sunday Adeyemo wishes to commend the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on his recent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East zone of Nigeria”.

“Chief Igboho believes that Mazi Kanu’s decision to end the five-year Monday economic shutdown in the South-East zone is a thoughtful and positive step,” the statement said.

Beyond halting the civil disobedience order, Igboho called for a strategic shift, urging Kanu to pursue a middle ground through formal engagement with the current administration.

“Chief Igboho encourages the IPOB leader to actively explore dialogue and mediation with the Federal Government as a means of resolving the deadlock surrounding his situation,” the statement added.

The activist expressed optimism that the Bola Tinubu administration would be open to such overtures, suggesting that a peaceful resolution is attainable if both sides engage in good faith.

“While it remains Mazi Kanu’s fundamental right to pursue self-determination, Chief Igboho believes that the current administration of President Bola Tinubu is inclined toward negotiation and mutual understanding, aimed at ensuring peace, shared prosperity, security, and the respect rightly owed to the South-East,” the statement added.

The statement also criticised individuals and groups allegedly profiting from unrest in the South-East, with Igboho warning that the “desecration” of the region must end to enable economic recovery.

“Chief Igboho urges all those benefiting from the violence and destruction in the South-East to desist from such acts for the sake of peace and the economic prosperity of both the region and the nation,” the statement said.

Sunday Igboho’s intervention represents a notable show of solidarity between the two prominent ethnic activists, highlighting a growing consensus on the need for dialogue and peaceful negotiation to achieve regional stability.

The pro-Biafran group had first imposed the Monday sit-at-home in August 2021 to protest the rendition and incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu in Nigeria.

During the exercise, markets, schools, banks, and offices remained closed.

The Media reports that Nnamdi Kanu was convicted of terrorism-related offences on November 20, 2025, and sentenced to life imprisonment—a verdict his family rejected, vowing to appeal.

Following the sentencing, Kanu was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Centre to serve his sentence, after the court ruled that the Kuje Custodial Centre would not be suitable for him.
