The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody a 52-year-old suspect, Ndibe Jude Onyenwe, in connection with an ongoing investigation involving conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, grievous bullet injuries and murder in Urum, Awka North Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that operatives of the 302 Artillery Regiment, Nigerian Army Cantonment, Onitsha, handed over the suspect to the police on February 5, 2026.

Ikenga alleged that the suspect conspired with one Felix Godwin and other individuals currently at large to sponsor armed men who carried out a violent ambush along a road in Urum, targeting unsuspecting members of the public.

According to the police, six persons sustained serious bullet injuries during the attack.

“During interrogation, Ndibe Jude Onyenwe reportedly confessed that Felix Godwin allegedly paid the sum of ₦500,000 through an Access Bank account to hire four gunmen from Ayamelum Local Government Area, alongside one Emeka (surname unknown) from Urum Community, who reportedly led the attack,” Ikenga stated.

He further revealed that the suspect claimed he was given ₦350,000 by the alleged mastermind for the purchase of four packets of cartridges used in the operation.

The police said the suspect remains in custody undergoing further interrogation, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend other suspects still at large. The command assured residents that justice would be pursued diligently and that updates would be communicated as investigations progress.

Meanwhile, the police recalled the recent arrest of another suspect in connection with kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related crimes in Awka. Operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, arrested 32-year-old Ifeanyi Ekemezie on February 17, 2026, at Isuaniocha in Awka North LGA, where a ransom of ₦1 million was allegedly collected.
