Real Madrid has confirmed that it provided “all available evidence” to UEFA on Thursday in support of Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, following his complaint of alleged racist abuse during the Champions League first-leg clash against Benfica.

The match in Lisbon on Tuesday was paused for 10 minutes after Vinicius claimed Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni called him a “monkey” during a confrontation. The Argentine midfielder, who covered his mouth during the incident as Vinicius celebrated a goal in front of home fans, denies the allegation.

UEFA announced on Wednesday it would investigate the incident as “allegations of discriminatory behaviour” emerged. Vinicius, who has faced repeated racist abuse since joining Real Madrid in 2018, received immediate backing from teammates and the wider football community.

In a statement, Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid has submitted all available evidence to UEFA regarding the incidents” during the Benfica game, which witnessed “unacceptable episodes of racism.”

The club added: “Real Madrid appreciates the unanimous support, backing, and affection that our player Vinicius Jr. has received from all areas of the global football community.”

Benfica responded on Wednesday by supporting Prestianni, describing the allegations as part of a “defamation campaign” against their player. Meanwhile, manager Jose Mourinho questioned Vinicius’ goal celebration, adding further tension to the situation.

The UEFA investigation is ongoing, and a ruling on the alleged discriminatory conduct is expected in the coming weeks.
