A fire outbreak has destroyed parts of the Fika Main Market in Fika Local Government Area, leaving traders counting heavy losses in the early hours of Monday.

The inferno reportedly caused extensive damage to shops and stalls, disrupting businesses and livelihoods.

Confirming the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, Mohammed Goje, said emergency responders were swiftly deployed to contain the blaze.

“We received a distress report of a fire outbreak at Fika Main Market, Fika LGA. Our response team, in collaboration with the Fire Service, is currently on the ground, working tirelessly to extinguish the fire and contain further damage,” Goje said.

He described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that it occurred shortly after the agency had concluded plans to support victims of earlier fire outbreaks in Bukarti and three other communities in the state.

“The scale of destruction is significant, and it has severely disrupted businesses and livelihoods. We deeply commiserate with the people of Fika and all those affected by this tragic incident. Government stands firmly with them in this trying moment and will continue to provide the necessary support within available resources,” he added.

Goje also expressed concern over the recent spate of fire incidents across the state, describing the trend as alarming and a wake-up call for stricter adherence to fire prevention and safety measures in markets, homes and public spaces.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report emergencies, stressing that while immediate interventions may not erase the emotional and economic impact of such losses, collective preparedness and vigilance can help prevent further devastation.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
