LAGOS APPROVES 13% HIKE IN BRT, BRI BUS FARES
By Aishat Momoh. O.

The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard routes.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted approval following appeals from regulated public transport operators.
According to LAMATA, the new fare structure will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026. The agency explained that the adjustment is intended to cushion the impact of sustained economic challenges affecting public transport operations.
“The review is also in line with the previously approved annual fare review mechanism,” the statement signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, read.
Officials cited persistent inflationary trends — with Nigeria’s inflation rate closing 2025 at 15.2 per cent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics — as a key factor driving the urgency of the review.
Bus Operating Companies (BOCs), the government said, have faced rising operational costs, including vehicle maintenance, spare parts, and staff salaries, especially following the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
The statement added that operators are investing in newer, cleaner and more fuel-efficient buses to improve passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability.
The state government, however, reassured commuters of its commitment to balancing affordability with the provision of safe, reliable and efficient public transportation services across Lagos.
