A convoy carrying Major General Bemgha Koughna, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 of Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, successfully foiled an ambush by suspected Lakurawa terrorist group members near Mayama Hill.

In a statement from the Nigerian Army’s X account, Lieutenant Col Olaniyi Osoba said the attack occurred as the convoy was en route to visit frontline troops. Armed assailants opened heavy fire, but Major General Koughna and his team responded decisively, neutralising five terrorists and repelling the attack.

Following the engagement, troops recovered a substantial cache of weapons and items, including:

One OJC gun and one PKT gun

Two AK-47 rifles and four AK-47 magazines

One bandolier of PKT ammunition and several rounds of 12.7mm ammo

A camel bag containing ₦840,000

Two mobile phones and five motorcycles

Osoba noted that troops remain deployed in the area to maintain security and prevent further attacks. He said the operation demonstrated the 8 Division’s commitment to protecting civilians and countering terrorist threats in the North West region.

It was earlier reported that troops of 1 Division, Sector 1 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA had also foiled a bandit attack in the Maraban Rido area of Kaduna State, neutralising a suspected violent extremist and recovering stolen livestock.
