An Ogun-based lawyer, Moruff Balogun, has praised the Federal Government and the Ogun State Government for rewarding Nigeria’s top teacher, describing the move as a clear affirmation of the importance of education.

He noted that the Federal Government recently presented the award-winning educator, Mr. Solanke Francis Taiwo of Ansa-Ur-Deen Main School I, Kemta Lawa, Abeokuta, with a car and ₦50 million. In addition, the Ogun State Government, led by Dapo Abiodun, further honoured him with a two-bedroom bungalow and ₦2.5 million in cash.

Balogun said the gestures go beyond mere ceremony, reflecting a genuine commitment to encouraging excellence in the education sector.

“Gratitude is more than a virtue; it is a culture that sustains excellence. When dedication and hard work are recognised, it sends a strong message that diligence is worthwhile,” he said.

He added that although teachers are often told their rewards await them in heaven, the recent recognition shows such appreciation can begin here on earth.

“Recognition, appreciation, and tangible support demonstrate that educators are valued. Teachers are the quiet builders of our future. They shape character, spark curiosity, and lay the intellectual foundation upon which professions like law, medicine, engineering, and governance are built,” he stated.

However, the legal practitioner urged authorities to extend similar recognition to outstanding students across higher institutions. He expressed concern over what he described as an imbalance in some tertiary institutions, where top graduating students receive relatively modest awards compared to winners of campus beauty pageants, who often enjoy greater prizes and visibility.

While acknowledging the role of extracurricular activities in campus life, Balogun stressed that academic achievement should not appear secondary in institutions primarily established to foster intellectual growth.

According to him, such disparities could send the wrong signal to hardworking students and encourage a culture where showmanship seems more rewarding than scholarship and discipline.

He concluded by calling on governments at all levels to institutionalise policies that consistently honour teachers and motivate students, urging other states and stakeholders to follow the example set by the Federal and Ogun State governments.

“When excellence in education is celebrated at every level — for both teachers and students — society advances with focus and purpose,” he said.
