As of February 24, 2026, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria, is facing emerging reports concerning his tenure in office.

Major news outlet reported on February 24, 2026, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly ordered the removal of Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun from his position as Inspector General of Police.

Reports indicate that he is set to be replaced by AIG Tunji Disu, who formerly led the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

Just before these reports emerged, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun obtained an interim injunction from an Abuja High Court on February 18, 2026, barring Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters from publishing “defamatory content” targeting him and his family.

His tenure has sparked ongoing debate over his retirement age. While some activists contended he should have stepped down at 60, recent amendments to the Police Act theoretically permitted him to remain in office until October 2027.
