The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into a shooting and alleged reckless pursuit involving some of its officers in Osogbo, which reportedly left a couple hospitalised after a crash.

The incident occurred on Saturday and sparked public outrage following reports that officers fired shots during an altercation with the occupants of a vehicle. The couple allegedly fled the scene and later crashed into a ditch after being pursued by the police team during what was described as a routine stop-and-search operation.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the matter was under immediate review.

“The Command has commenced an immediate review of the incident reported to have occurred around the Itaolokan Junction to the Oke Ayepe area in Osogbo. Preliminary findings are being gathered, including operational records and eyewitness accounts,” he said.

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, visited the victims at the hospital. The couple were said to be responding to treatment, with the command undertaking responsibility for their medical bills.

Confirming that officers linked to the incident were being investigated, the police said a team suspected to have been involved is currently under scrutiny.

“Any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms, if established, will not be condoned. Officers found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary consequences,” the statement noted.

The command also urged members of the public to provide credible information, including video evidence or first-hand accounts, to assist the investigation, assuring that justice would be pursued based on facts and evidence.
