The Ikeja Local Government Council has demolished shanties allegedly used as criminal hideouts along Alade Market and Obafemi Awolowo Way in Lagos State, recovering firearms and other dangerous weapons during the enforcement exercise.

Items recovered from the makeshift structures included guns, knives, axes, charms and other suspected weapons. The council said the exhibits have been handed over to relevant security authorities for further investigation.

The operation was led by the Council Chairman, Akeem Olalekan Dauda, popularly known as AKOD, alongside council officials and environmental officers. The team targeted illegal structures erected along road setbacks, which intelligence reports indicated were being used by criminals to rob motorists and pedestrians.

Speaking on the exercise, Dauda said the operation commenced at Alade, off Awolowo Road, where structures built in violation of environmental and urban planning regulations were removed.

“These structures not only defaced the environment but also posed health, security and safety risks to residents and passersby,” he said.

He added that several businesses found violating environmental laws, including improper waste disposal and encroachment on designated setbacks, were issued warnings and compliance notices.

According to the council, the enforcement drive aligns with the “E” (Environment) pillar of the I.K.E.J.A Agenda — a development blueprint focused on environmental sustainability, urban renewal, public health and strict sanitation enforcement.

Dauda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean, safe and orderly Ikeja, pledging sustained monitoring and intensified enforcement across the local government area.

Members of the enforcement team included Vice Chairman Abisola Omisore, Chief of Staff Chief Adeniyi Adeyi and councillors representing Wards B to F in Ikeja Local Government.
