LAGOS DEPUTY GOVERNOR URGES PARENTS TO BALANCE LOVE WITH DISCIPLINE IN CHILDREN

Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has cautioned parents against over-pampering children without instilling discipline, warning that it could have adverse consequences for families and society.
He gave the advice during the sixth annual Ramadan lecture and prayer in honour of the late Oba Muftau Hamzat, organised by the Ifako-Ijaiye Muslim Community in Ogba, Lagos.
Dr. Hamzat emphasised that while children should be loved and encouraged, such care must be balanced with responsibility, moral guidance, and value-based upbringing. He noted that over-indulgence contributes to behavioural challenges among young people and reflects broader societal concerns.
“Proper moral training and character development are essential to ensure our children grow into responsible adults and do not become a burden later in life,” he said, urging parents to be intentional about raising their children properly.
He added that the stability and progress of society are closely linked to strong family units, and called on religious leaders to reinforce messages of responsible parenting, discipline, and moral development in their teachings.
Earlier, Abdul-Lateef Sunmonu encouraged Muslims to renew their consciousness of Allah, emphasising unity, gratitude, and trust in divine guidance. Sunmonu described the late monarch as a patriarch whose service continues to inspire religious, political, and social development.
Also speaking, Prof. Abdulrazaq Alaro delivered a lecture titled “Building a Pristine Home as the Foundation of an Ideal Society”, highlighting that peace, security, and prosperity depend on strong family values. He warned that parents abdicating responsibilities to schools undermines society’s foundation and stressed the need to instil God-consciousness and respect for others in children.
“If parents continue to abdicate their duties at home, the vision of an ideal society will remain unattainable,” Prof. Alaro said, cautioning that failure to nurture young people properly could lead to future social challenges and threaten community stability.
