Ademola Adeleke has urged journalists and media professionals in Osun State to uphold balanced reporting and adopt zero tolerance for fake news in carrying out their duties.

The governor made the appeal while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, during a courtesy visit led by its newly elected chairman, Adeyemi Aboderin, in Osogbo on Thursday.

He stressed the importance of professionalism and strict adherence to journalistic ethics, calling on the media to stand firmly against electoral malpractice as the state prepares for the August 15, 2025 governorship election. According to him, responsible journalism is crucial to the survival of democracy.

Describing the media as the fourth estate of the realm, Adeleke said it has a constitutional and moral obligation to hold the executive, legislature and judiciary accountable, while promoting transparency and fairness in governance.

The governor congratulated Aboderin on his election, noting that his emergence reflected the confidence members of the union have in his leadership. He also encouraged the NUJ to collaborate with the state government to advance development and strengthen democratic principles, assuring the union that its proposals would be carefully considered and implemented where necessary.

In his remarks, Aboderin said the visit was aimed at introducing the new executive members of the council and appreciating the governor for his administration’s support for journalists in the state. He stated that the union is committed to rebuilding and reinforcing cooperation between the government and media practitioners to ensure a peaceful and credible governorship election.

Aboderin revealed that the union had proposed training workshops and seminars to prepare journalists for comprehensive and responsible coverage of the electoral process. He also called for stronger ties between the media and the current administration to enhance effective communication and mutual understanding.

The NUJ chairman further appealed to the governor to consider the permanent employment of freelance journalists at the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) and to continue supporting journalists across the state.

Also speaking, the Osun Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, congratulated the new NUJ leadership and thanked them for the visit. He noted that the state government remained neutral during the NUJ election and disclosed that steps were being taken to regularise the employment status of freelance staff at OSBC.
