A bank customer narrowly escaped death on Friday after suspected armed robbers trailed him from a bank and attacked him along Shiroro Road in Minna, Niger State, making away with millions of naira and his vehicle.

The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on March 6, 2026.

The victim, Mr. David Adebayo Emmanuel, told journalists that he had withdrawn N5 million from a bank shortly before 2:00 p.m., before heading to another bank to withdraw an additional N3 million. He also had N1 million on him.

Emmanuel said he stopped briefly at Iyafemi Restaurant along Shiroro Road to buy food when the assailants struck.

“I had just entered my car when a well-dressed man approached me and threatened to kill me if I moved. At first, I thought he was a police officer joking, but when he pointed a gun at me, I realised it was a robbery,” he explained.

The victim added that he managed to wrestle the rifle from the suspect and ran back into the restaurant as two other robbers, waiting nearby, rushed to his car.

“I started firing the gun even though I had no experience with it. I believe I shot one of them in the forehead. The other two tried to drag him to their car, but when it wouldn’t start, they abandoned him and escaped with my vehicle,” Emmanuel said.

Police sources confirmed that the robbers took the victim’s money and fled with his Toyota Corolla.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that the suspects abandoned their own vehicle at the scene, which was recovered along with one of the rifles used in the attack.

“Police operatives attached to the Tudun-Wada Division recovered the rifle and the abandoned vehicle,” he said.

The case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation, and efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects are ongoing.
