Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Policy Communication, has rejected allegations of corruption while defending the administration’s economic reforms.
In an interview with Al Jazeera journalist Mehdi Hasan, Bwala praised President Tinubu’s policies and reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling corruption across all sectors.
Hasan questioned Bwala about Tinubu’s controversial statement claiming that corruption had been eliminated in Nigeria, citing Transparency International’s reports that corruption persists in areas like defense and security.

“President Tinubu said in August, ‘There is no more corruption in Nigeria.’ That’s a ridiculous thing to say, isn’t it?” Hasan asked.
Bwala responded by highlighting the government’s anti-corruption efforts: “We investigate any case of corruption, not just in the defense sector but anywhere in government. People in government have been investigated, dismissed, or prosecuted. Our administration’s resolve is clear.”
On Tinubu’s statement, Bwala argued it had been taken out of context, noting the president was referring to reforms such as the removal of the fuel subsidy and measures to curb corruption in the oil sector.
Hasan pressed further, questioning the appointment of Abubakar Bagudu as Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, citing past allegations linked to the late military ruler Sani Abacha and noting that Bagudu had returned $163 million in a US settlement.
Bwala defended the appointment, emphasizing Nigeria’s sovereignty: “The decision of the court in the United States does not bind the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
