Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to use their votes to elect credible leaders in the 2027 general elections, cautioning against the practice of vote-selling.

He gave the advice during a Ramadan Tafsir held at his residence in Minna, stressing that selling one’s vote goes against religious principles. According to him, a vote is a powerful civic responsibility and should not be traded for personal gain.

“Selling of votes is unreligious; your vote is very important, and it is Haram to sell your votes,” he said.

Abubakar also urged politicians to conduct themselves with decorum during elections, warning against bitterness, character attacks, and mudslinging. He advised that elections should be viewed as a democratic contest with both winners and losers, rather than a do-or-die battle.

Commenting on the country’s economic situation, the former leader encouraged Muslims to use the Ramadan period for prayers and reflection.

“The economy is biting hard, and we are in a difficult situation. However, I am glad that the well-to-do in society are supporting those in need, and this spirit of generosity should continue,” he said.

He further urged Muslims to sustain the values and lessons learned during Ramadan, encouraging them to remain committed to the teachings of Islam even after the holy month.
