NDLEA ARRESTS EX-LAGOS COUNCILLOR, RECOVERS 40KG SKUNK HIDDEN IN DIAPERS

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested former Ibeju-Lekki councillor Sheleru Olalekan for alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking.
The 45-year-old, who served two terms representing Orimedu community and currently works as a legislative aide, was apprehended on March 2, 2026, at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki.
NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said in a statement on Sunday that operatives recovered 40 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis, from one of the rooms during a search of the suspect’s home.
“In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of both the drugs and the property where they were found,” the statement added.
“He previously served two terms as a councillor representing Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council,” NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said.
In a separate operation in the Federal Capital Territory on March 3, NDLEA officers intercepted 32-year-old businessman Emeka Hyginus Okwor while travelling from Obollo-Afor in Enugu State to Zuba, Abuja.
A search of his luggage uncovered 1,000 tablets of tapentadol 250mg hidden inside baby diapers. The suspect reportedly confessed that he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, where he runs a provision store.
NDLEA operatives carried out multiple drug interceptions across Nigeria in early March.
On March 3, officers on patrol along the Kabba–Obajana highway in Kogi State intercepted 1.550kg of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis, concealed inside a standing fan carton. The consignment belonged to 36-year-old Cameroonian Mey Ali Muhamat, who was travelling in a commercial bus from Lagos to Cameroon via Lokoja, Kano, and Maiduguri, the agency said.
In Niger State on March 4, operatives intercepted a commercial bus along the Mokwa–Jebba road coming from Ibadan, Oyo State, carrying 500 pieces of improvised explosive device components hidden in a sack. A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the intended recipient, 21-year-old Osama Abdullahi, in Pelegi, Mashegu Local Government Area.
In Adamawa State, NDLEA officers in Yola recovered 122,000 tramadol pills and 700 grams of methamphetamine from the false bottom of a truck transporting 2,000 cartons of local drinks.
Similarly, 20-year-old Muhammed Ali was arrested at Gadar Tamburawa in Kano State on March 3 with 11,283 tramadol pills.
In Ogun State, a raid in Ogere led to the arrest of two suspects, Nazifi Mudansir and Kabiru Musa, along with 46 kilograms of skunk.
In Delta State, two individuals — 25-year-old Joy Chukwuma and 22-year-old Eugene Felix — were arrested on March 7 in Ogwashi-Uku with 18.63kg of skunk, 10.8 litres of codeine-based syrup, and 4,268 pills of tramadol and swinol.
NDLEA operatives have destroyed 1,910.25kg of skunk on two farms in Egbisi Forest, Uhumwonde Local Government Area, Edo State, arresting suspects Eke London, 48, and Austin Isusi, 49. Another suspect, Alaba Adeboye, 47, was apprehended in Ikhin town, Owan East Local Government Area, with 176.50kg of skunk.
The agency said its commands nationwide continued the War Against Drug Abuse campaign, conducting sensitisation programmes in schools and communities across Oyo, Niger, Zamfara, Lagos, Sokoto, Ebonyi, and Anambra states.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers in Lagos, FCT, Kano, Niger, Kogi, Edo, Ogun, Delta, and Adamawa for their arrests and seizures, urging them to maintain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control across the country.
