The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday unveiled electrification projects in the Gbaji-Seme and Owode-Apa communities of Badagry West Local Council Development Area, a move aimed at boosting electricity supply to thousands of homes and businesses within the corridor.
Sanwo-Olu was represented at the commissioning of the projects—facilitated by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources—by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.
Speaking during the event, Hamzat stated that the electrification projects would greatly enhance power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridor. He added that the initiative marks a significant milestone for residents of Badagry West LCDA.
He said, “The electrification works we are commissioning today will significantly strengthen power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridor, and thousands of homes, shops and businesses will now benefit from improved and more stable electricity supply.
“We are not simply commissioning power infrastructure; we are restoring confidence, unlocking opportunity, and bringing lasting relief to communities that have waited patiently for improved electricity supply.
“Badagry occupies a unique place in the story of Lagos State. It is not only a historic town of immense cultural significance; it is also one of the most important gateways into our state and our country.”
He noted that the Badagry corridor holds economic potential for trade, commerce and cross-border enterprise, considering it is a gateway to the Republic of Benin and the wider West African region.
“For that potential to be fully realised, communities must have access to reliable infrastructure, and electricity is one of the most critical of them all,” he added.
He said the intervention aligns with his administration’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, “particularly our commitment to expanding energy access and building resilient infrastructure that supports economic growth across every part of Lagos State.”
He added that with the recent inauguration of the board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Lagos is positioning itself to regulate and expand electricity supply more effectively.
The governor noted that the project would also create opportunities for residents and businesses in the area.
He commended the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Lagos State Electrification Agency for their efforts and professionalism in successfully delivering the project.
