In a statement, Lt. Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade, confirmed the attack. “During efforts to clear the obstruction, the soldiers came under a coordinated ambush by unknown gunmen, leading to a fierce exchange of fire,” he said.

Following a contact report from troops on the ground, reinforcements from the 245 Battalion, equipped with armored and tactical support vehicles, were deployed to assist the 13 Brigade soldiers. The rapid response helped repel the attack and restore control of the area.

Lt. Sokoya added that while four attackers were neutralized, several others managed to escape. Troops have since begun cordon-and-search operations in communities suspected to be linked to the gunmen to prevent further security threats.

Brig.-Gen. Patrick Alimikhena, Commander of 13 Brigade, commended the troops for their bravery and professionalism, assuring residents that the Nigerian Army remains committed to safeguarding lives and maintaining peace in Cross River State.
