The number of victims injured in the gas explosion in Calabar has risen to 60, according to the state government.
The Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, disclosed this on Sunday during a visit to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where the victims are currently receiving treatment.
Ayuk said the visit was aimed at assessing the condition of those affected by the incident, which occurred on Saturday along Edibe Edibe in Calabar South.
“We arrived at the Accident and Emergency Department of UCTH, where about 60 victims of the gas explosion are receiving treatment,” he said.
The latest figure marks a sharp increase from the initial 30 victims reported earlier by the state governor, Bassey Otu, during his visit to the scene.
The commissioner added that victims with minor burn injuries would be transferred to the General Hospital in Calabar to decongest the teaching hospital and ensure efficient medical care.
He was accompanied on the visit by the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Ekpeyong Akiba, and received by the Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Ikpeme Ikpeme, who provided updates on the patients’ condition.
The explosion, caused by a gas leak at a plant in the area, affected several homes and left many residents injured.
The state government has pledged to cover the medical expenses of the victims as part of its response to the incident, while health authorities continue to coordinate treatment efforts.
