The Olatunji Disu has directed a nationwide reduction of police tactical teams to enhance supervision, improve accountability, and address public complaints.

According to Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Placid, the directive limits tactical teams at Zonal and State Command levels to a maximum of five, while Area Commands and Divisions are restricted to three teams. The reduction can be implemented through merging or disbanding units at the discretion of formation heads.

The move is intended to free up personnel for deployment to police stations and divisions, which have experienced manpower shortages due to the proliferation of tactical units.

“The IGP expects this step to strengthen supervision of existing teams, bolster Police Divisions, and reduce complaints about tactical team excesses,” Placid said.

He clarified that the directive does not apply to state-created security outfits, including the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, Oyo Special Response Squad, Bayelsa’s Operation DOO-AKPOR, and other similar units across the country.

The Force emphasized that the decision aims to ensure a people-friendly, accountable policing system while maintaining the crime-fighting contributions of tactical units.

Placid also addressed media misreports suggesting the IGP had ordered the outright dissolution of all tactical units, describing such reports as inaccurate. He reiterated that the directive focuses solely on reducing numbers to enhance supervision and address public concerns over operational excesses.
