Former Vice President and 2023 People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned against the detention of individuals solely because of their political beliefs or affiliations.
He made the remarks on his official Facebook page on Monday in response to the recent arrests of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, among others.
Atiku stated that such actions represent a significant threat to democratic principles.
The warning came after his return from Umrah (lesser Hajj) in Saudi Arabia, where he subsequently led a delegation on a solidarity visit to former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

He specifically called for the release of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, along with others he described as political detainees.
Atiku emphasized that no one should be detained solely for holding opposing political views or being affiliated with a party different from the ruling government.
He stated that democracy must be grounded in tolerance, respect for diverse opinions, and adherence to the rule of law, warning that suppressing dissent erodes public trust in governance.
