The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has confirmed that a suspected child theft attempt was thwarted in Ogbagi Akoko, following swift intervention by a woman and vigilant community members.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, the incident occurred on March 22, 2026, after a report by a resident, Mrs. Olanireti.
According to the police, the complainant had sent her three-year-old son to his grandmother when a concerned resident raised an alarm after noticing suspicious activity involving the child.
The suspects, identified as Adefarati Idowu and Adepoju Babatunde, were intercepted while attempting to flee with the child on an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle. The child’s grandmother, Mrs. Olawale, reportedly held onto the motorcycle, while other residents quickly mobilised to block the suspects, leading to their arrest.
“The child was successfully rescued unhurt,” the statement said, adding that the suspects were apprehended through a joint effort between the community and the police.
The case has since been transferred to the command headquarters for further investigation, with efforts ongoing to determine if the suspects are linked to a wider criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, commended the community for its vigilance, describing the incident as a strong example of effective community policing.
The command urged parents and guardians to remain alert and encouraged residents to promptly report suspicious activities, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
