The Abia State Government has addressed reports regarding the arrest of Nigerian Army personnel, Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon, who was recently received by Governor Alex Otti and promised medical assistance.

In a statement on Wednesday, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, said information from military authorities indicated that Amoke was arrested over an alleged fraud committed some time ago.

The statement added that the soldier previously served in Abia State and had sustained an injury after leaving the state, prompting an NGO to bring him to the governor for medical support.

Ekeoma emphasized that Otti’s offer of assistance was purely compassionate, reflecting the administration’s humanitarian approach, which has previously extended similar support to citizens and security personnel who suffered injuries while performing their duties.

The statement read: “For instance, the government recently provided financial assistance to the family of a naval officer who died in a car accident near the Osisioma Flyover in Aba.

“Similarly, support was extended to the family of an immigration officer who was reportedly stabbed to death by his wife in Umuahia.”

“Recently, eight Nigerian Army personnel involved in a car accident were discharged from the hospital after completing treatment, including complex surgeries funded by the state government.”

“All these cases, and many others too numerous to mention, were carefully investigated before financial support was provided, as the government is not a charity,” the statement said.

The governor’s spokesperson, Ferdinand Ekeoma, explained that the state government had requested due diligence on Sergeant Amoke Simon, a process that may have influenced the military’s actions leading to his arrest shortly after the visit.

“Since investigating corruption cases falls outside the jurisdiction of the state government, we fully support any legitimate measures by the Nigerian Army to discipline erring personnel and ensure justice is served.

“The government will continue to provide financial, medical, and other humanitarian assistance to victims of misfortune whenever necessary, regardless of the controversies surrounding Sergeant Amoke’s case,” Ekeoma added.
