The National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports of an appeal filed against the party’s convention, insisting that the exercise will proceed as scheduled.
Speaking at a pre-convention press conference on Saturday, the committee’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said the leadership was unaware of any legal challenge by the Tanimu Turaki group regarding the recent Court of Appeal judgment on the party’s crisis.
Mohammed also stated that there was no court order halting the planned convention, describing such claims as mere social media fabrications.
“As you have heard, the convention will go ahead tomorrow, and all arrangements have been concluded. Any reports or insinuations are things we are only seeing on social media,” he said.
He reaffirmed that the convention would be inclusive, noting that several prominent party members who had not aligned with any faction were expected to attend. Among those listed were former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, alongside other senators, National Assembly members, and key stakeholders.
According to him, the party had complied fully with its constitution and all relevant laws in organising the convention, assuring members of a credible, transparent, and peaceful exercise.
Mohammed described the convention as a defining moment in the PDP’s history, one that would reaffirm its democratic ideals and commitment to due process. He also urged party members to remain calm amid attempts by some individuals to disrupt the process, stressing that the party’s door remains open for reconciliation.
The committee further expressed appreciation to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for providing support and ensuring a conducive environment for the convention in Abuja.
The PDP leadership maintained that the convention would proceed as planned, underscoring its resolve to strengthen internal democracy and unity within the party.
