Transport Ministry Launches App, Code *735# For Passenger Safety

Hon. Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has inaugurated the Committee for the flag-off of Transport short code *735# and Transport Social Media (TSM) mobile Application as a policy tool for the enhancement of passengers and Motor Parks safety as well as providing database for stakeholders.
Inaugurating the Committee on behalf of the Hon. Minister of Transportation, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Sabiu Zakari stated that the Media App developed will curtail the menace of road transport related crimes such as kidnapping, “one chance” assault and touting in our Motor Parks.
Amaechi noted that the road transport sub-sector which accounts for over 90 percent of movements of persons, goods and services, remains unregulated leaving the sector with free entry and exit of stakeholders thereby resulting to entrance of unwanted elements in the operations of commercial activities on our roads.
He disclosed that to authenticate the process, the Company has secured a code from the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) being *735# for passengers to derive the driver’s Electronic Number (EN) in order to ascertain the authenticity of the genuine transport Unions and their members.
He said that having realised the huge benefits of the project which Nigerians stand to gain, some of which are: Road Crime Control System (RCCS) which is a platform through which the public can prevent themselves from falling victim of such crimes as, “one chance” kidnapping, assault, verifiable Electronic code (EN code) to Transport Unions and Associations members which will further protect them from undue delay by security agents, the Ministry of Transportation moved to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Messrs. 2TOC Solution Limited and also took a step further to sought the buy-in of critical and relevant stakeholders for effective implementation of the project.
The Minister urged the committee members to ensure that they come up with strategic recommendations towards a successful flag-off of the project due to the immense benefits it will bring to bear in the sector.
Earlier, in her opening remarks, the Director, Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration in the Ministry, DR. Anthony Ekpa, who is the chairperson of the committee, said that the project, which is a short code *735# and Transport Social Media (TSM) Mobile Application is technologically based and was developed by the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with Nigeria Police and Messrs 2TOC Solution Limited pursuant to its mandate of policy formulation and coordinating Stakeholders’ activities in relation to Road Transport Sub-sector.
She further stated that the product is a transport scheme meant to sanitise the transportation sector by curbing all transportation’s related vices.
The Committee members are drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, State Security Service (SSS), Nigerian Road Safety Commission, Nigerian Civil Defence and Safety Corps, Nigeria Fire Service, Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Association of Commercial Motor Cycle Owners and Repairs of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owner (NARTO), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and Representative of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
