An Osun State High Court in Ikire has convicted Prophet Segun Philip, 42, and Owolabi Adeeko, 23, to death by hanging for the ritual murder of Favour Daley-Oladele, a final-year student at Lagos State University.

While rendering a decision in the case in Ikire on Monday, Justice Christiana Obadina also sentenced Bola Adeeko, Owolabi’s mother, who is 46 years old, to two years in prison for eating human flesh.

Prior to the man’s invitation to take her to Ikoyi, Osun State, in December 2019, Owolabi and Favour had been dating after meeting at LASU.

Favour was brought to Philip’s church, which is located in Ikoyi, during the visit, where she was poisoned and murdered with a pestle.

Both men removed some of her organs before burying Favour’s body in a little grave on the grounds of the church.

According to reports, the deceased’s organs were utilized to create mixtures for Owolabi’s mother to boost her at-the-time plummeting business wealth.

The three defendants were initially charged with conspiracy and murder contrary to Sections 324 and 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 34 Laws of Osun State, 2002, after their arrests in January 2020, before being re-arrested in November 2021 before the High Court in Ikire.

The prosecution team testified in court that the defendants committed the crime on December 8, 2019, under the direction of Mrs. Adekemi Bello, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Osun State Ministry of Justice, who appeared with Ajibola Alade.

Bello further informed the court that Philip was also taken into custody by the Ogun State Police Command and that during questioning, Owolabi admitted to the police that he had been using his girlfriend to cook meals for a money ritual for his mother.

During the course of the trial, the prosecution team called the police investigative officer who worked on the case and eight other witnesses and presented a number of exhibits to the court.

The defendants testified in the witness box in support of their various roles in the case without calling any witnesses.

Adeshina Olaniyan, the defendants’ attorney, had spoken to the court and appealed for mercy.

In her ruling, Justice Obadina stated that Philip and Owolabi had been found guilty of conspiracy and murder after the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

They were given a death by hanging sentence for the murder and a 14-year sentence for conspiracy, while Owolabi’s mother, Bola, was given a two-year prison term for eating human flesh.
