PARTY SUPPORTERS SURROUND INEC OFFICE, AWAITS BAYELSA GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION FINAL RESULTS
In Yenagoua, the capital of Bayelsa State, a large number of supporters of the several political parties competing in the state’s governorship race have surrounded the Independent National Electoral Commission office, anticipating the announcement of the results.
After learning that the results collection process had started, the party’s supporters—mostly young people—were observed running towards the INEC office on Yenagoa’s Swali Road.
Following receipt of the results from the three local government areas—Klobuma/Opukuma, Ogbia, and Yenagoa, respectively—the commission postponed the result collection till 3 p.m.
Following the interval, party members, some of whom were female, were observed carrying chairs and setting up shop in close proximity to the INEC office in two separate locations.
They would have found their way to the INEC headquarters if it weren’t for the troops and police officers who stopped them.
To stop the party supporters from moving farther, three patrol vans and two armoured personnel carriers manned by ferocious-looking agents were stationed in opposing directions.
The INEC has not met again to resume collection as of Sunday afternoon, when this report was sent.
