LASG SET TO REPAIR DAMAGED ALAPERE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE, OTHERS

The Lagos State Government has expressed its readiness to repair the partially damaged Alapere Pedestrian Bridge last December as a result of a collision by an overloaded truck.
A statement issued today by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure (Office of Infrastructure) said the Bridge was immediately closed and prevented from use as the extent of damage could not be immediately ascertained because the incident occurred when most construction companies that could have been invited to conduct preliminary investigations on the damaged bridge had closed for the year,
The structural integrity tests could therefore not be conducted on what was left of the collapsed bridge until the resumption of most of these companies at the beginning of this year.
The result of the integrity tests was recently submitted as well as a preliminary structural re-design of the bridge that allows for an increased headroom to 5.8 metres to prevent any recurrence of such an incident in the future. The final design will be concluded shortly, and a nominated contractor will mobilise for the commencement of physical construction activities.
The State Government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is not unaware of the importance of the Alapere Pedestrian Bridge and has therefore taken bold steps to ease the crossing of pedestrians at the location immediately upon the damage of the Bridge.
Some of the measures taken include creating access through the median barriers, and provision of rumble strips to reduce the speed of approaching vehicles and zebra crossings. Also, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) are stationed at the location to assist pedestrians crossing.
The Lagos State Government will not stop placing a high premium on the lives and properties of its residents and will continue to strive to ensure that the safety and comfort of all remain a priority
In its quest to ensure sustainable infrastructure development and judicious use of taxpayers’ money, the State Government will no longer tolerate any avoidable abuse and damage to critical infrastructure. Henceforth the owners of trucks that carelessly cause any damage will be prosecuted and made to bear the full cost of the repair.
Similarly, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure (Office of Infrastructure), has commenced the repairs/replacement of worn-out expansion joints on some bridges across the State with Kodesoh Bridge in Ikeja being the first to be attended to, others will follow shortly.
The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration would not rest on its oars to ensure a smooth flow of traffic across the nook and cranny of the State. The State Government, therefore, seeks the cooperation and understanding of the motoring public towards the realisation of this objective.
