As of December 2022, 7,746 deceased electors had been struck from the national voter registration in Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, according to confirmation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This was revealed on Thursday by Victoria Etta-Messi, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, who emphasised the commission’s dedication to upholding an accurate voter registry.

“Seven thousand, seven hundred and forty-six decreased persons across the 36 states and the FCT were removed from the National Register of voters as of December 2022,” she stated.

Despite progress in cleaning the register, INEC highlighted persistent challenges during its 2023 post-general election review in December 2024. One major issue is the difficulty of removing deceased voters due to inadequate official death records.

“Problems with official death records continue to make it very difficult for INEC to remove deceased registrants,” the commission noted, adding that enhanced collaboration with agencies like the National Population Commission (NPC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is critical to address the issue.

Using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), INEC also addressed multiple and duplicate registrations, identifying and eliminating 2,780,756 invalid registrations, or 22.6% of new registrants.

There were also concerns expressed about the decreased voter turnout. Turnout for the 2023 National Assembly and presidential elections was 27.5%, down from 35.6% in 2019. An inflated voter list and suggested actions, including suspending those who haven’t cast a ballot in the previous three elections and requiring them to revalidate their registration, were cited by stakeholders as contributing factors to this reduction.

In order to strengthen electoral integrity in the next elections, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to resolving these problems and enhancing the voter registration procedure.
