The senate has moved to pass a legislation that would provide for residency rights for every citizen of federal republic of Nigeria who have lived or resided consecutively for not less than 5 years.
The bill which was sponsored by Sen Dino Melaye said is aimed at eradicating the indigene – settlers status and bring about a situation where long term residents can be incorporated into the communities they reside irrespective of their state of Origin.
Sen Melaye in his lead debate said the bill will do away with the idea of state of origin which he said would be replaced with state of residence in order to bring about the much needed cohesion, unity and integration.
