Leading members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including current and former governors as well as key party stakeholders, are holding a closed-door meeting in Abuja to tackle growing internal rifts and a wave of defections that pose a threat to the party’s unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The strategic session, initiated by the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, is taking place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

Sources revealed that the meeting aims to forge a path toward party unity, resolve internal leadership disputes, and strategize for upcoming polls, including the off-season governorship election in Anambra.

Among the key attendees are FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), as well as former Senate President Bukola Saraki and several ex-governors such as Liyel Imoke, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Notable absences — including those of Governors Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba) — have underscored deepening fractures within the PDP.

According to insider sources, key issues on the agenda include ongoing disputes within the National Working Committee, particularly concerning the roles of Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum and the National Secretary.

Discussions may also explore potential alliances with other opposition parties or a strategic emphasis on strengthening internal party structures.

The decisions reached at the meeting are expected to play a critical role in shaping the PDP’s unity and strategy as it prepares for major electoral contests and aims to reassert itself as a strong opposition platform.
