The Labour Party crisis has deepened, with the faction led by Julius Abure appealing to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and control Governor Alex Otti of Abia State. The crisis stems from a leadership struggle within the party, with Abure’s faction accusing Otti of undermining the party’s unity and causing division. The appeal comes amid growing concerns over the party’s future, as internal disputes continue to escalate. Abure’s faction is seeking the president’s help to ensure stability and restore order to the Labour Party.

Factional National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk condemned Governor Otti’s alleged attempts to intimidate Labour Party leaders, including calls for the arrest of Julius Abure. At a press briefing in Abuja, Farouk accused Otti—who he claims was recently suspended from the party—of overstepping his authority and threatening democracy. He cited incidents of arrests and detention of party officials under Otti’s orders and urged President Tinubu and others to intervene. Farouk warned against tyranny in a democratic system.

The Abure-led faction reacted with disbelief to Otti’s recent media comments, in which he allegedly called Abure a “clown in search of a crown.”

Farouk claimed that Governor Otti only joined the Labour Party in 2022 after being rejected by other parties and that Julius Abure, already the party’s National Chairman, was responsible for Otti’s rise. He accused Otti of failing to contribute to the party and called him “the clown.”

Farouk accused Governor Otti of neglecting the leadership of the Labour Party after winning the governorship election. He criticized Otti for not supporting National Working Committee (NWC) members at his inauguration, calling the experience a “one chance.” Farouk further alleged that Otti’s actions were part of a plan to weaken the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 elections to make way for his own political ambitions.

Farouk also addressed the Supreme Court’s judgment, clarifying that the court did not remove Abure as the National Chairman or hand over the party’s leadership to Otti and his supporters. He emphasized that the court ruled that internal party leadership matters are not subject to judicial review, asserting that Otti and his allies have no legal basis to claim control of the party.

The Abure faction urged President Tinubu to intervene and stop Governor Otti, warning against “tyranny in a democratic system.” They appealed to Nigerians to support their efforts to protect the party’s leadership and secure its future in preparation for the 2027 elections.
