BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY REFUTES N2BN THEFT ALLEGATIONS
By: Motunrayo Aniwura
Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi has denied claims that N2 billion went missing from the institution.
The denial was issued on Monday by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Simon Terver, who labeled the allegations as unfounded and misleading.
Ibya had reported that the university lost N2 billion due to a failed ICT portal, which allegedly led to the suspension of the ICT Director for investigation.
He was arrested by the Benue State Police Command on April 25, 2025, and later appeared in court, where he was remanded at the Makurdi Correctional Centre.
After spending nearly a week in custody, he was granted bail, and the case was postponed until July 2025.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Prof. Terver also commented on students’ reluctance to pay fees, attributing it to economic challenges and cultural attitudes that equate school fees with taxation.
“Many students are studying without paying fees,” he said.
Terver noted that the administration ‘s cautious approach to enforcement of payment of fees by students is to prevent unrest.
He clarified that a committee is reviewing fee compliance but stressed that the process was unrelated to any financial misconduct.
“No N2 billion is missing. The committee’s work is strictly administrative, not investigative,” Terver stated.
