THREE SENATORS FROM THE PDP DEFECTS TO APC
By Jen Nomamiukor
Three senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State are preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a significant political shift in the region.
The serving senators from Kebbi State have officially informed the Senate of their decision to leave the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Several senators defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), as announced during a Senate session presided over by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin. The announcement caused a commotion in the chamber lasting over fifteen minutes. With the defections, APC’s representation in the 10th National Assembly increased to 68 senators, further solidifying its majority. The new Senate composition is: APC 68, PDP 30, Labour Party 5, NNPP 2, SDP 2, and APGA 1. Notable attendees included APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, members of the party’s National Working Committee, and Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) praised the development as a reflection of democratic principles and stated that the ruling party welcomes others to join.
The individual dismissed claims that Nigeria is becoming a one-party state, emphasizing that no one is forced to join the party, including the three Senators. Additionally, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, referred to their return to the party as a “homecoming,” noting that they are foundational members of the APC.
