The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday, June 5, 2025, commissioned 31 state-of-the-art combat gun boats in Lagos State, marking a major step forward in strengthening maritime security across Nigeria’s inland waterways and coastal regions.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, IGP Egbetokun described the deployment of the gun boats as a strategic response to the evolving security challenges on the nation’s waterways. He emphasized that the boats are equipped with cutting-edge navigation and communication systems to enhance precision patrol, rapid threat response, and coordination during rescue operations.

“These gun boats are not ordinary vessels,” the police chief noted. “They represent a bold investment in modern policing, featuring solar-powered systems that demonstrate our commitment to sustainable, environmentally responsible law enforcement.”

The IGP highlighted that the boats will be deployed across the country’s backwaters, creeks, and riverine areas to curb criminal activities, protect lives and property, and reassure citizens of their safety.

Acknowledging the importance of inter-agency collaboration, Egbetokun pledged continued synergy between the Nigeria Police Force and other key maritime security stakeholders including the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA).

He also reaffirmed the police’s commitment to intelligence-led operations and community engagement, particularly in coastal communities where local intelligence is critical in denying criminals safe havens.

Egbetokun expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s strategic support and commitment to the modernization of the Nigeria Police Force. He described the procurement of the boats as a clear demonstration of the government’s dedication to equipping law enforcement agencies for effective service delivery.

“Our resolve to secure the nation is unshakable,” the IGP declared, assuring Nigerians of the Police Force’s dedication to their constitutional responsibilities.

The event drew stakeholders from security agencies, government institutions, and the maritime sector, who lauded the initiative as a timely and necessary intervention in securing Nigeria’s waterways.
