The Senate has joined in the growing voices seeking a better approach by the EFCC in its investigation of corruption cases, this is as its Committee on Anti-corruption and Financial Crimes begins an inquest into the arrest of the Chairman of Innoson Motors, Innocent Chukwuma.
The Committee chaired by Sen. Chukwuka Utazi is investigating the abuse of power by the anti-graft agency as it relates to its involvement in a purely commercial transaction involving the Innoson boss and GTBank.
It would be recalled that late last year, on the 19th December, the Anambra-born industrialist was allegedly manhandled and his wife assaulted before being whisked away by well armed EFCC operatives.
The widely reported incident of his arrest had since sparked a series of other events, including lawsuits and a Senate investigative hearing. National Assembly correspondent Folashade Abdulsalami reports that at
the Senate Investigative hearing on Wednesday, the lawyer of innoson Group of Motors, Prof. McCarthy Mbadingha recounted the actions of the operatives of the EFCC at the point of arrest of his principal.
The account of the legal representative of the car manufacturing company was then followed by Sen Dino Melaye’s inquiry on whether personnel of the anti-graft agency had warrant authorizing the said arrest.
The Senate Committee however concluded that the actions of the EFCC is bad example of law enforcement, noting the negative ripple effect it may also have on investment.
The Committee subsequently urged the EFCC, GTBank and Innoson Motors to present other vital documents that will aid its investigation.
The GTB lawyer, Adebowale Kamoru in his own submission said since all matters relating to the banks transaction with Innoson and involvement of the EFCC are being litigated upon in the court of law, the bank will not make any submission .
The Investigative public hearing was therefore scheduled to resume in a week’s time.
