The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has marked Nigeria’s Democracy Day with a renewed call for press freedom, independent institutions, and inclusive governance to strengthen the country’s democratic journey.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the association described June 12 as a “hugely significant date” that commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election won by Chief Moshood Abiola.

The date, officially recognised as a national holiday in 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, remains a poignant reminder of Nigeria’s democratic evolution and the sacrifices made by countless patriots.

“This pivotal day serves as a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s ongoing journey towards robust democracy and the high hopes citizens place in their elected officials,” the statement read.

“It is a day when we collectively reflect on the enduring struggle for democratic governance and honor the profound sacrifices made by countless Nigerians who tirelessly championed the right to choose their leaders.”

NUJ noted the important role the media continues to play in “shaping the narrative of our democracy, frequently amidst considerable adversity,” while acknowledging strides made in peaceful transitions and democratic consolidation.

However, the association stressed the need to confront persistent challenges like corruption, insecurity, and socio-economic disparities, stating, “This commemoration isn’t just about remembering the past; it’s a powerful affirmation of our commitment to a future where democratic principles truly flourish.”

NUJ paid tribute to the “brave souls who endured immense suffering, imprisonment, and even made the ultimate sacrifice in their pursuit of freedom and democracy,” and reiterated the importance of defending the fundamental rights of speech, assembly, and association.

Calling on the government to safeguard the media, NUJ declared: “We unequivocally call upon the government to uphold and safeguard press freedom, ensuring that journalists can execute their professional duties without fear of reprisal or intimidation.”

The association further advocated for “robust and transparent institutions” that are independent, impartial, and accountable to the people, describing them as “essential for upholding the rule of law, ensuring fairness, and building public trust.”

It also highlighted the urgency of implementing “sustainable economic policies and programmes that genuinely benefit all Nigerians” as a means to address poverty and inequality.

Concluding the Democracy Day message, NUJ encouraged Nigerians “to engage in a profound reflection on both our achievements and the formidable obstacles that lie ahead,” and urged unity in building “a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous society.”

“Let us join hands, irrespective of our backgrounds, to foster a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient democracy that truly represents the rich diversity of our citizens,” it added.
