The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kebbi State has announced the arrest of 121 suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of 270.253 kilograms of illicit drugs between January and June 2025.

Commander of the NDLEA in the state, Rabi’u Abdullahi-Sokoto, disclosed this on Thursday during the grand finale of the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

According to him, the arrests comprised 116 males and 5 females, while the seized substances included 214.737kg of Cannabis Sativa and 55.516kg of psychotropic substances.

“In the first half of this year alone, we have secured convictions for 24 drug offenders and successfully rehabilitated 27 individuals,” Abdullahi-Sokoto stated.

The commander described drug abuse as a “hydra-headed monster” threatening families and communities, stressing the direct link between drug use and rising crime rates.

“We cannot afford to be complacent. Many crimes are either committed under the influence of drugs or in pursuit of them,” he said.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s event, “Evidence is Clear, Invest in Prevention,” Abdullahi-Sokoto said it aligns with the ongoing War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, which the command is implementing across schools, workplaces, faith-based groups, and community organizations.

He emphasised that prevention remains the most effective and affordable approach, noting: “The popular saying ‘prevention is better than cure’ is not only apt but also cost-effective.”

The commander also expressed appreciation to the wife of the state governor, Zainab-Nasare Idris, for the renovation of the female rehabilitation centre, and to Governor Nasir Idris for his continued support to the agency’s operations.

He called for strengthened collaboration among political leaders, traditional and religious institutions, parents, the media, and other security agencies, urging collective action to curb drug abuse and trafficking in Kebbi State.
