The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has unveiled a new policy that grants lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
According to the minister, the policy—aimed at boosting officer welfare—was approved by President Bola Tinubu.
He disclosed this on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he highlighted the ministry’s achievements and reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing institutional capacity and performance across all its agencies.
This was contained in a statement issued by the NPRO/Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham, on Thursday, following the retreat.
“In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, the minister announced that any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller/Comptroller/Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
The statement also conveyed the minister’s gratitude to the President.
“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” it added.
Speaking further, Dr. Tunji-Ojo said: “We have successfully cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions,” noting that more than 50,000 officers had been promoted in the past two years.
He explained that moving forward, promotions would be determined by a new merit-based system anchored on capacity and performance.
As part of the ministry’s reform drive, Tunji-Ojo revealed that new training manuals had been developed, and construction had commenced on a world-class Fire Academy designed to compete with leading international institutions, including the Arizona Fire Academy.
The minister also stressed the importance of mental health support for officers and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment in this area.
In addition, he urged the Federal Fire Service to seek private sector partnerships, stressing that such collaboration would be crucial in advancing service delivery, infrastructure development, and the modernisation of firefighting operations across Nigeria.
