Prosecutors in Utah have formally charged 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson with the murder of prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead last week during a speaking event at a university campus in the state.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced the charges at a press conference on Tuesday, confirming that Robinson faces aggravated murder a capital offence alongside six other charges including obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
Authorities said Robinson fired a single shot from a rifle, striking Kirk in the neck from a rooftop. He was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt. Prosecutors allege he later instructed his roommate to remain silent about the crime.
Gray also disclosed that he had filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty. “I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently as county attorney based solely on the available evidence and the nature of the crime,” he said.
Kirk, founder of the conservative youth movement Turning Point USA and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was a polarising figure who leveraged social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube to amplify conservative views and sharply criticize progressive causes, including transgender rights.
His killing has stirred political debate, with the White House on Monday unveiling plans to tackle what it described as a left-wing “domestic terror movement,” sparking concerns over potential restrictions on dissent.
Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel faced bipartisan criticism after initially announcing a suspect’s arrest, only to later retract the statement. He came under sharp questioning from a Senate panel on Tuesday, where Democratic Senator Corey Booker clashed heatedly with him over the agency’s handling of the case.
