The Ogun State Government has raised a public health alert over the increasing number of diphtheria cases across the state, urging residents to take immediate preventive measures against the potentially fatal infection.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, in a statement, described diphtheria as a highly contagious bacterial disease that has now become a public health concern in the state.

She stressed that vaccination remains the most effective form of protection, calling on parents to ensure their children are fully immunized while encouraging adults who missed their doses to get vaccinated.

“Diphtheria is preventable. Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure that children receive all recommended routine immunizations. Adults who missed their vaccines should also get protected,” Coker said.

The commissioner explained that the disease spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact, and can lead to severe complications or death if not treated promptly.

She listed common symptoms to watch for, including sore throat, fever, swollen neck, breathing or swallowing difficulties, and a thick gray or white coating in the throat or nose.

Coker also urged residents to maintain good hygiene, avoid contact with symptomatic individuals, and seek prompt medical attention instead of resorting to self-medication.

“Anyone who develops symptoms should report immediately to the nearest health facility. Do not self-medicate,” she warned.
