The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists, including a serving police officer, and recovered firearms and ammunition during a signing-out ceremony for final-year students at the University of Port Harcourt.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement on Friday, said the suspects Corporal Onwukwe Godswill, attached to Elimgbu Division, and a 200-level Biomedical Technology student, Ifeanyi Israel—were apprehended on September 26, 2025, while allegedly preparing for a clash with rival cultists on campus.

Weapons, including pistols, ammunition, and axes, were recovered from the suspects. A subsequent search of Corporal Onwukwe’s residence led to the discovery of an additional locally made pistol and two machetes..

The command confirmed that both suspects and the exhibits are in custody as investigations continue to identify accomplices. Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju assured residents of the state’s safety, warning that “there will be no hiding place for criminals in Rivers State,” and urged the public to report suspicious activities.
