The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, has urged young girls to embrace education as a tool for leadership, social change, and empowerment.
Speaking at the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child celebration held at Dolphin Senior Secondary School, Lagos Island, Dokunmu-Adegbite said the theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,”emphasizes the importance of self-belief and the ability of girls to create solutions in times of crisis.
She noted that the International Day of the Girl Child, declared by the United Nations, recognizes the strength, intelligence, and courage of girls to change the world even in the face of adversity.
“Every girl has the strength, intelligence, and courage to change the world. Education equips you with the knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems,” she said.
Dokunmu-Adegbite encouraged the students to see crises as opportunities for leadership and to wear their experiences with pride.
“Your voice is part of your power. Wear your scars as ornaments; don’t hide them. Before anyone uses them against you, you’ve already owned them,” she told the audience.
She further charged the girls to believe in themselves, invest in their education, and lead boldly, stressing that leadership is not about age or status but about courage and commitment to make a difference.
“Be determined in your hearts that you’re going to be leaders of tomorrow. But like I’ve always said, tomorrow is no longer far away — it’s right here today,” she added.
Dokunmu-Adegbite concluded by affirming that every girl has the power to shape solutions, uplift others, and stand strong on the frontlines of change.
