NIGERIA ADVANCES CLEAN-MOBILITY DRIVE WITH COMMISSIONING OF 40 ELECTRIC BUSES

Nigeria has taken a significant step in its clean-energy transition with the commissioning of 40 electric buses, marking the first major public rollout under the federal government’s electric-vehicle (EV) roadmap.
The initiative is a key pillar of the country’s Energy Transition Plan, which targets net-zero emissions by 2060. It also aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “gas-to-prosperity” strategy, which positions gas as a transitional fuel while accelerating investment in EV technology.
The electric-bus deployment comes under the Presidential CNG Initiative (PiCNG), launched in 2023 as part of the government’s response to fuel subsidy removal. The programme aims to cut transport costs which consume as much as 25% of household spendingand reduce national dependence on petrol.
Officials say the rollout demonstrates Nigeria’s intention to compete in Africa’s fast-growing electric-mobility market, spurred by increasing fuel prices, climate-action commitments and the need for stronger domestic energy security.
The government is expected to expand the EV deployment alongside CNG infrastructure development as part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s transport system.
