LAWYER SEEKS COURT ACTION AGAINST SOLUDO OVER ONITSHA MARKET CLOSURE

By: Balogun Ibrahim
Abuja-based human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara has criticised Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo over the shutdown of the Onitsha market.
Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Opara said the governor should be taken to court over the executive order.
He described the action as an act of trespass and a violation of fundamental human rights.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Monday ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market.
Reacting to the decision, Opara said the governor had no legal basis to shut down the market and should be sued for issuing such an order. He argued that if traders chose on their own to observe a sit-at-home on Mondays, it was their personal decision.
He said the market and the shops within it are private property, operated with individual funds, and should not be forcibly closed by the government for refusing to open on specific days.

Opara described the move as executive recklessness and said legal action should be taken against the governor for what he called an unlawful decision.
He also advised traders facing threats to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities, stressing that any attempt to coerce business owners into closing their shops should be formally reported.
