Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State on Saturday launched the distribution of 54,600 bags of rice to support the less privileged during the Ramadan period.

The flag-off ceremony took place at Maganda Road in Kano, according to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa. Speaking at the event, Yusuf described the initiative as an annual tradition aimed at alleviating hardship for residents during the holy month of fasting.

“It is my singular honour and privilege to be with you today for this annual flag-off of Ramadan support distribution for the year 1447 AH,” the governor said, explaining that the intervention would cover all 44 local government areas of the state, as well as selected beneficiaries.

A total of 91 trucks, equivalent to 54,600 bags of 50kg rice, have been approved for distribution, with 44 trucks allocated to the local government areas and 47 trucks reserved for selected groups and individuals across the state. Committees at both the state and local government levels have been formed to supervise the distribution process, with the Secretary to the State Government chairing the state-level committee and the Ministry of Agriculture serving as the coordinating body.

The governor also called for collaboration from the Federal Government, corporate organisations, and well-meaning individuals to ease the economic burden on citizens during Ramadan.

Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, commended the governor, noting that the initiative would significantly reduce anxiety among residents. The Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yushau Soja, expressed appreciation for the involvement of local governments and assured that the rice would be judiciously distributed to intended beneficiaries.
