The Oyo State Police Command on Monday foiled a planned bandit attack on Elebe Village, Aleniboro, via Irawo Mine in Atisbo Local Government Area, neutralising two suspected attackers during a gun duel.

In a statement issued in Ibadan, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the operation followed credible intelligence from a good Samaritan who alerted authorities to the presence of about 10 armed men hiding in a farm settlement with plans to strike the community under the cover of darkness.

According to police, the suspects were armed with two AK-47 rifles, single-barrel guns and locally made pistols. Acting on the information, the Divisional Police Officer of Tede Division briefed the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, who ordered the immediate deployment of additional operational assets.

Security operatives, working alongside local hunters, stormed the hideout. The suspects reportedly opened fire on sighting the team, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which two bandits were killed while others fled with suspected bullet wounds.

Police said items recovered from the scene included a locally made pistol, live and expended ammunition, suspected Indian hemp, two mobile phones and a bottle containing a substance believed to be a mixed drink. The area has since been secured, with bush-combing and surveillance operations ongoing to apprehend fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for continued logistical and strategic support.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns in Oyo State following recent criminal incidents, including the reported abduction of a 12-year-old student in Ibadan last week. Police urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely intelligence to security agencies.
