Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a man, Ifeanyi Mba, over an alleged ₦10 million land fraud in Enugu State.
The arrest was disclosed by the anti-graft agency in a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday.
According to the EFCC, the suspect was apprehended by operatives of its EFCC Enugu Zonal Directorate following a petition alleging that the complainant paid him ₦10 million for a parcel of land located at Plot 677, Owo/Premier Layout, in the Ogui Nike community.
The petitioner reportedly discovered later that the land was already being developed by unknown individuals.
The commission said the petitioner contacted the suspect over the development on the land, but he was allegedly told that the property belonged to the government.
“According to the petitioner, when he contacted the suspect regarding the development, he said he was informed that the said property was government-owned,” the statement said.
The petitioner further claimed that subsequent attempts to recover the money proved unsuccessful as the suspect became unreachable.
Preliminary investigations by the EFCC revealed that there is no layout known as Plot 677 Owo/Premier within government-acquired areas, noting that Owo and Premier are separate layouts.
The anti-graft agency said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the Enugu Zonal Directorate to tackle fraud and other financial crimes in the state.
In a related development earlier reported in January, the Enugu State Government recovered about ₦1.28 billion from Sujimoto Luxury Construction Ltd. following investigations by the EFCC into the alleged diversion of funds meant for the construction of Smart Green Schools across the state.
The recovered funds, which were part of payments made to the company for projects reportedly abandoned or substantially unexecuted, were formally handed over to the state government at the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Office.
