Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has called on his players to become club legends by drawing inspiration from the Magpies’ famous 1997 Champions League victory over Barcelona ahead of their last-16 first-leg showdown.
Howe, who watched the historic match as a teenager while starting his playing career at Bournemouth, highlighted Faustino Asprilla’s hat-trick and Keith Gillespie’s performance in Newcastle’s 3-2 group stage win as benchmarks for greatness.
“Yes, I watched the game. It was one of those legendary moments,” Howe said on Monday. “Of course, we want people in future years to be talking about this team the same way they talk about Tino Asprilla and Keith Gillespie.”
Newcastle host Barcelona on Tuesday in a Champions League last-16 tie, marking only the club’s second appearance at this stage. Howe, who arrived at Newcastle in 2021, has transformed the club with the support of its Saudi owners, guiding them from a period of underachievement to European competition.
Following their League Cup triumph last season – Newcastle’s first trophy in 56 years – Howe described the Barcelona match as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity.
“There are only 16 teams left, and we are one of them,” Howe said. “This is a moment for us to grab. We don’t want to kick ourselves or waste the opportunity. As long as we perform to our maximum, we have to accept the result.”
The manager stressed the importance of adopting an underdog mentality to challenge the five-time European champions. “Rising to the occasion and embracing the size of the game is crucial. We are playing a very good, outstandingly well-coached team, and we will need every psychological tool available,” he said.
Newcastle have already faced Barcelona this season, losing 2-1 at home in the group stage. Howe remains confident that lessons from that tie will help his team prepare for Tuesday’s match.
“All our Champions League games have been a great rehearsal for this moment. We can take a lot from the performance and hopefully learn lessons from that tie,” he added.
Newcastle’s clash with Barcelona represents a defining moment for Howe’s squad as they aim to etch their names alongside the club’s historic figures in European competition.
