Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and banditry may be shifting into a new phase, as the Sokoto State Government has endorsed a new international military collaboration while advocating for more intelligence-driven operations.

In a statement, the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters commended the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, for facilitating the training of 200 Nigerian Special Forces personnel in Turkey, describing the move as a proactive response to evolving security threats.

The state government noted that the importance of the initiative goes beyond the training itself, signalling a transition from conventional combat methods to more precise, unconventional strategies suited to modern warfare.

It emphasised that today’s security challenges demand agility, intelligence, and specialised expertise rather than traditional battlefield approaches.

According to the statement, insurgents and bandits have adopted increasingly unpredictable tactics, requiring Nigeria’s military to respond with more flexible and highly trained units.

The government stressed that such specialised training must be supported by sustained investment in intelligence gathering, surveillance technology, and stronger coordination among security agencies to achieve lasting impact.

It also underscored the need to reinforce institutional structures capable of effectively utilising these advanced skills, including the development of well-organised elite units.

While applauding the Federal Government’s efforts, the Sokoto State Government cautioned that training alone is insufficient without a clear strategy, coordination, and adequate support systems.

Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the state expressed confidence that a more strategic, intelligence-led approach would help Nigeria gradually overcome its security challenges and restore stability.
